The place on the course that most golfers will lose strokes on is not at the tee and most of the time not even on the greens. Many golfers sacrifice strokes to lay up prior to a green because they are not comfortable with their wedges and short irons.

As Callahan does say, a lay up shot could be what seems to be intelligent. Following a beautiful drive the worst thing a golfer could do is to lay up because of a water hazard or bunker because they are not comfortable with their short game.
